From Helsinki to the High North: A Motorcycle Adventure Through Finnish Lapland
As I stand in the bustling harbor of Tallinn, I feel the excitement swell for my upcoming journey across the Baltic Sea. The crisp air sweeps against my skin, a harbinger of the northern adventure that awaits as I prepare to take the ferry to Helsinki. My faithful companion, a 2017 BMW R1200 GSA, stands ready, its engine softly humming in the background.
The ferry terminal buzzes with the rumble of trucks and the chatter of travelers, but my thoughts drift to the winding roads that lie ahead—through Finland's enchanting Lake District and onward, into the wilderness of Lapland.
Suddenly, a deep roar interrupts my reverie. A fellow motorcyclist parks behind me, an imposing figure clad in leather. "Jyrki Lehtinen," he introduces himself, removing his helmet to reveal a friendly smile. As an avid motorcyclist and guide for PeterPanBike.fi, Jyrki shares tales of his favorite Finnish routes. "You simply must ride through the Lake District," he insists enthusiastically. He provides me with his contact details for emergencies—a reassuring gesture.
The ferry’s ramp descends with a metallic clang; my adventure is finally about to begin.

Through the Lake District
As soon as I disembark in Helsinki, I quickly leave the urban chaos behind and feel a rush of freedom as I enter the Lake District of Southern Finland. The BMW glides smoothly over the winding roads, flanked by lush forests and sparkling lakes that shimmer under the bright sun. This region feels like a canvas of nature—every turn unveils a breathtaking vista.
The peace here is palpable; only a handful of cars share these idyllic stretches of asphalt with me. Small villages with colorful wooden houses are scattered across the landscape—each seeming to boast its own lakeside sauna. These traditional Finnish saunas, most of them wood-fired, are an integral part of daily life. The sharp, smoky scent of birchwood and steam suggests they are the perfect spot to wash away the stress of the journey.
Driving deeper into this serene environment, I spot a moose at the edge of the forest, an embodiment of Finland's pristine wilderness.
After a long day on the bike, I opt for wild camping—a Finnish tradition that allows adventurers like me to experience nature up close. As evening falls, I pitch my tent by a quiet lake. The air grows still, the only sounds are the waves gently lapping against the shore.
Soon, however, I am joined by an unwelcome nuisance: mosquitoes. Notorious for swarming in the Finnish summer, these tiny creatures descend in thick droves as I try to enjoy my campfire dinner. Armed with repellent, I hastily eat my meal, swatting at the swarms—my first experience with what the locals call "the mosquito war".

Heading North
The next morning, I continue my journey toward the northern landscapes. As I ride on, the forests thin out and the lakes grow vaster—the landscape transforms into a rugged wilderness that inspires both awe and humility. Here, on the empty roads surrounded by marshes and endless fields, I feel small yet completely connected to nature.
After hours of riding, Rovaniemi appears on the horizon. Located on the edge of the Arctic Circle, it is an unexpected oasis. Here, I first encounter the Sami culture, the Indigenous people of Lapland. In a small shop, Sami artisans sell colorful gákti (traditional clothing), and I learn about reindeer herding, which has defined their way of life for centuries. The Sami are deeply connected to the land and nature, and their rituals and lifestyle are still honored here. For me, Rovaniemi offers a moment of rest, along with a visit to Santa Claus Village, which is nearby, before I continue my trip.

Further into the North
Refreshed by my break in Rovaniemi, I embrace the adventure again as I ride further north, toward the endless plains of Lapland—Jyrki's words echoing in my mind: "Enjoy the peace and space". Here, in the heart of Lapland, I experience Sami traditions firsthand.
Along the way, I see reindeer herds slowly crossing the road, guided by Sami herders. The sound of their bells mixes with the wind—a reminder of how deeply nature and culture are intertwined here. Even now—with the mosquitoes still present—the magic remains untarnished.
On my faithful BMW, I feel free and boundless as I traverse roads where few others travel. This is where Finland lies—a country where solitude reigns without loneliness. Every ride summons new adventures waiting just beyond each curve in this breathtaking journey through Finnish Lapland.
