This detailed route information gives more information about the story:
The Long Road Home: From Arctic Farewell to Summer Heat
This is a 4-part information article about a round-trip Scandinavia. These articles describe the motorcycle route ridden from the Netherlands through Germany and Poland, the Baltic States, Finland, and finally from the North of Norway back to the South via the Lofoten and Fjords back into Sweden.

This five-week, multi-country route is designed for the adventurous rider ready to leave the highway behind. Starting in the Netherlands, this journey weaves through Central Europe and the Baltics to Tallinn before heading into the stunning wilderness of Finland and the Lofoten and majestic fjords of Norway.
Note on the Route: This guide details a path focusing on scenic B-roads and sometimes includes off-road sections (gravel roads), providing a true taste of wilderness riding. The provided GPX file divides the entire route into 20 tracks, offering rough guidance for day-by-day planning.
The Homeward Bound Ride: Sweden, Denmark, and the Final Leg
Leg 8: Midsummer and Southern Sweden
Høylandet, Norway to the Swedish Border
The day you cross into Sweden should be celebrated. The roads are often warm and winding—perfect for a scenic route. However, crossing on Midsummer’s Eve means you need to plan ahead.
- Cultural Alert: Midsummer’s Eve is one of Sweden’s biggest holidays, meaning most shops, restaurants, and campsite receptions will be closed for the festivities.
- Stopover Strategy: Search for a campsite right over the border. Though the staff may be busy celebrating, you may find an incredible, lively atmosphere with music, laughter, barbecues, and people wearing traditional Midsummer flower crowns.
- Meal Tip: Since food services will be closed, befriend your neighbors! A small gesture of friendship might just earn you a spare beer to go with your noodles and bread.
Swedish Border to Malmö Area
Today, prepare for a long ride, potentially battling rain and wet roads.
- Rider Strategy: If the weather turns, opt for the safer route along the E6 highway rather than the narrow, winding scenic roads to avoid risk.
- Stopover Suggestion: Aim for a cozy stop near Malmö. Hanksville Farm Camping offers a cabin stay that often includes dinner and breakfast through services like Booking.com. A long, hot shower after packing a wet tent is an unbeatable luxury.
Malmö, Sweden to Slagelse, Denmark (The Bridge Crossing)
Today features two spectacular engineering highlights as you leave Sweden and enter Denmark.
- Route Highlight 1: Øresund Bridge: Start the day by crossing the iconic Øresund Bridge (Øresundsbron). This stunning 8-kilometer bridge-and-tunnel masterpiece connects the two countries and offers breathtaking views over the strait.
- Stopover Suggestion: Head for the Slagelse Municipality, aiming for a spot like Bildsø Camping. If the weather improves, immediately pitch your damp tents to dry in the comfortable breeze.
- Highlight 2 (View): From the campsite or the nearby beach, you can see the Great Belt Bridge (Storebæltsbroen), which you will cross tomorrow.
- Geocaching Bonus: The forest around Bildsø Camping often holds a hidden cache or two, offering a fun treasure hunt to log your find in Denmark.
Leg 9: Denmark and the German Home Stretch
Slagelse to Nortorf, Germany
The morning starts with a major crossing and then a push through Denmark’s flatlands toward Germany.
- Route Highlight: Great Belt Bridge: Cross the impressive Great Belt Bridge (Storebæltsbroen), an 18-kilometer suspension bridge that links Zealand to the mainland.
- Toll Alert: Be prepared for automated toll systems to potentially miscategorize your motorcycle as a car, resulting in a higher charge. Keep your records to file a claim when you get home.
- Riding Conditions: Denmark largely consists of flat terrain and endless farmlands. Use B-roads but be prepared for a less exciting ride compared to the mountains and fjords you've grown used to.
- Crossing the Border: The difference upon entering Germany is striking: you transition instantly from flat fields to lush greenery and the well-maintained roads of Schleswig-Holstein.
- Stopover Suggestion: Stop in Nortorf, a small, well-equipped town with many supermarkets and restaurants. For dinner, indulge in Balkan-style cuisine at a Montenegrin restaurant for a hearty, affordable German meal.
Nortorf to Bad Zwischenahn, Germany
The weather shifts dramatically today; be prepared for intense heat as you head south.
- Riding Challenge: You will likely encounter temperatures near or higher, making riding difficult, especially when stuck at traffic lights. Plan to start and stop earlier to avoid the worst of the heat.
- Route Highlight: Elbe River Ferry: A picturesque moment is taking the ferry across the Elbe River, which offers a peaceful break from the heat.
- Stopover Suggestion: End your day in the spa town of Bad Zwischenahn, known for the beautiful Zwischenahn Lake ("Zwischenahner Meer").
- Evening Highlight: Dine at a spot near the lake, such as a local sailing club. Later, enjoy the quiet campground ambience, which may even feature a unique self-service beer fridge based on trust.
Bad Zwischenahn to Lattrop-Breklenkamp, Netherlands (Final Stop)
The very last day of your epic ride.
- Riding Challenge: Prepare for sweltering heat (up to ) and frustrating urban traffic, including an "endless series of red lights" as you approach the border.
- Final Stopover: Cross into the Netherlands and head for your final quiet and well-maintained campsite, such as De Rammelbeek in Lattrop-Breklenkamp.
- Final Reward: The first thing you must do upon arrival is shed your gear and dive into the swimming lake—a simple, necessary pleasure after weeks on the road.
- Farewell: Savor your final dinner and drinks at the campsite, reflecting on the 9000+ kilometers covered and the unforgettable moments of your five-week adventure
