Crossing into Lithuania: Rain, Rough Roads, and Unexpected Encounters

This morning started wet, with rain falling steadily from 5 AM. Luckily, it paused between 8 and 9, just long enough to grab a quick coffee and pack up our damp tent. By 9, we were back on the road.

First stop: a gas station to fill the tank and grab a quick breakfast with an espresso. The heavy rain had eased into a light drizzle by then, and we were off, heading towards Lithuania, passing close to the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad before finally crossing the border. We’re now living an hour ahead — hello, new time zone! 🤗

Today, we took scenic backroads, leaving the seemingly endless roadworks behind us. Unfortunately, that meant encountering plenty of rough roads instead. We stopped for lunch in a tiny village square in the middle of nowhere, where an elderly woman approached us, speaking in Polish. We couldn’t understand each other, but it was a nice moment of connection.

The temperature climbed back up to 28°C by midday—perfect conditions for thunderstorms. When we finally reached our campsite, we hurried to set up the wet tent just before the first storm hit. The storms have been short but intense, rolling in every half hour or so, followed by dry spells.

Between showers, we ventured into town to pick up supplies for dinner. Thankfully, it stayed dry long enough to cook, eat, and even do the dishes. I also managed to brew two cups of coffee on the trusty gasoline stove—though it roared like a jet engine overhead!

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the famous Hill of Crosses before continuing on to Riva in Latvia. Fingers crossed for a dry, cooler day!
